Private equipment guidelines
The following guidelines apply to privately marked equipment when BNSF serves as the originating line-haul carrier:
- Private rail equipment must comply with the Association of American Railroads (AAR) Circular OT-5, which governs reporting marks and mechanical designations. Privately marked equipment must also be registered through the OT-57 process administered by Railinc. Additional information is available through Railinc's Loading Authority (OT-57) program.
- Companies that control private equipment are responsible for managing the movement of empty equipment to BNSF origin locations and connecting carrier locations to help maintain network fluidity.
- BNSF may require controlling entities to move equipment off-line at their expense to support network fluidity.
- Private equipment may be subject to charges when held for loading, unloading or other purposes.
