Safety Through Mitigation

We strengthen rail safety through proactive risk mitigation, employee collaboration and continuous improvement across our network.

Cargo security

Protecting shipments across our network

We help prevent cargo theft through a comprehensive Resource Protection program that combines proactive railroad police patrols, advanced technology and physical security measures.

BNSF Police serve as the law enforcement arm of our Resource Protection team. State and local governments grant railroad police law enforcement authority, while the federal government authorizes them to operate across state lines.

Operating across BNSF's 32,500 route-mile network, the team helps protect railroad property, prevent cargo theft and address trespassing concerns. Their work includes:

  • Analyzing crime trends
  • Conducting proactive patrols
  • Deploying K-9 units
  • Partnering with local law enforcement agencies
  • Investigating crimes on railroad property

Canine police

Specialized support for law enforcement operations

BNSF's police canine teams are recognized throughout the law enforcement community for their expertise and operational support. These teams help:

  • Deter crime
  • Expedite train searches
  • Discourage trespassing
  • Detect explosives

Joint labor initiatives

Building a culture of safety together

We believe the most effective safety programs are developed by the employees closest to the work. Through collaboration between labor and management, we identify potential risks and continuously strengthen safe operating practices.

Local site safety teams

More than 100 terminals and yards have site safety teams that help identify and reduce human and environmental safety risks. Union and management representatives co-chair these teams, which are composed largely of union employees.

Division safety teams

Each of BNSF's 10 operating divisions has a division safety team. Labor and management representatives work together to guide division safety processes and address issues raised by local site safety teams.

System-wide collaboration

BNSF employees also participate in the Safety Assurance and Compliance Process Task Force, a joint safety improvement initiative that brings together labor and management representatives to strengthen safety performance across the railroad.
