Safety Through Response
We invest in training and programs that help prevent hazardous materials (hazmat) incidents. When one happens, BNSF is ready to respond.
Managing hazardous materials
Local emergency responders across our network train with BNSF environmental specialists on hazmat awareness and emergency response. We work side by side with communities so responders are ready to act quickly if an incident occurs.
- 1
BNSF trains an average of 8,000 local emergency responders each year in communities across our network.
- 2
BNSF stations more than 160 hazmat responders and advisors at 70 locations across our network.
- 3
BNSF partners with emergency response contractors and industrial firefighters along our right-of-way.

Committed to first responders
First responder training is a top priority for BNSF and for the safety of the communities we serve. Our dedicated training website gives first responders and customers one place to find the resources they need.
There, you can:
- Take online BNSF hazmat training courses.
- Download a summary of the BNSF System Emergency Response Plan.
- Request a hazmat traffic flow report.
- Request access to AskRail™ and other response tools.

Traffic flow reports
Traffic flow reports summarize the hazardous materials moving through a community. BNSF provides these reports on request to local emergency responders, emergency management officials and elected officials. We share this information confidentially. Please do not release it publicly.
