Intermodal 101
Learn how intermodal shipping moves freight using multiple modes of transportation to put shipments on their optimal delivery path.
The Origin Point
Intermodal shipping begins when freight is loaded into a container or trailer at a customer facility. Depending on the shipment's route, freight may move by ship, rail and truck as it travels between ports, distribution centers and inland markets on its way to the final destination.

Long-Distance by Rail
The container or trailer is transferred directly from a ship to a train or moved by truck to an intermodal facility, where it begins its rail journey across the BNSF network, often covering hundreds or thousands of miles.
The Final Destination
The shipment arrives at an intermodal facility near its destination, where it is transferred back to a truck for final delivery. Once unloaded, the container or trailer is returned to service, helping keep freight moving across the supply chain.
