Security across the supply chain

  • We employ our own fully certified state law enforcement officers, who carry full police and arrest powers.
  • We patrol our network in uniform to prevent trespassing and cargo theft.
  • We work directly with state and local law enforcement, customers and communities.
  • We partner with customers and provide free, on-site security consultation.
  • We use site-specific procedures and physical security to protect cargo at our intermodal facilities.

Homeland security and C-TPAT

  1. 1

    What C-TPAT is

BNSF is a certified member of the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT).

C-TPAT is a joint effort between the trade community and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Together, they develop, strengthen and maintain effective security processes across the global supply chain.

  2. 2

    How CBP certifies members

CBP recognizes C-TPAT companies as diligent in maintaining a secure supply chain. Members agree to strengthen their own security practices and those of their supply chain partners.

Each member must secure every area of its supply chain, including documents, information systems, employee and contractor identification, equipment and facilities.

  3. 3

    Our C-TPAT membership

Because C-TPAT covers the entire supply chain, many of our customers participate as well. If your team needs our credentials, our C-TPAT partner identification number is BURRAI00848.

Shipment Integrity Reporting (SIR) Program

The SIR program gives you timely information about any seal changes that occur while your shipment is in BNSF custody.

You can request SIR reports automatically, sent to a designated printer, fax number or email address. We generally provide the report within three business days.

Easy cable protection

The Figure 8 security cable keeps your intermodal shipments out of reach on every leg of the trip. This 3/16-inch high-tensile-strength steel cable secures most cargo doors in seconds.

The cable threads through the upper locking rods of your doors, placing it out of reach and making tampering significantly harder. At the loading dock, the cable stays within reach and is easy to remove.
