Intermodal Network Update for Friday, July 15, 2022
Our service recovery program remains ongoing as BNSF operating teams focus on effectively aligning resources with freight volumes. The temporary reduction of active car inventory has created additional capacity across our North Region and coal routes and modest incremental improvements in our operating conditions on our Southern Transcon. Combined with other measures we have implemented, we expect to see continued momentum in the weeks ahead.
We experienced a derailment yesterday on the Northern Transcon, our primary route between the Pacific Northwest and the Midwest, approximately 50 miles west of Minot, North Dakota. Both main tracks in this location are currently out of service. Engineering teams and equipment are at the scene, and track restoration efforts remain ongoing. One main track is expected to reopen Saturday morning, with the other anticipated to be back in service Sunday afternoon. With the high volume of traffic moving in this area, customers with shipments designated to move through this corridor should expect delays until operations have fully normalized.
Our temporary embargo remains in effect for some westbound traffic moving to destinations in California. This limited embargo impacts automotive shipments and specific agricultural and industrial commodities. This embargo does not cover intermodal shipments, which are managed through alternate means. Customers can refer to our online form to submit permit requests, view the current list of commodities prohibited from the embargo, and obtain additional information. While our impacted customers will experience short-term disruptions, we are confident these aggressive actions will help restore and increase network productivity.
Hot and mostly dry conditions are expected as a heat wave continues to move across the Central and Western States this weekend and next week. BNSF teams are monitoring conditions closely, conducting additional track inspections, and are prepared to respond to any heat-related service interruptions.
