Intermodal Network Update for Friday, February 14, 2025
OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE
Recovery efforts are ongoing as BNSF teams work to restore normal operations along our Northern Corridor following a week of frigid temperatures across much of the North Region. As previously communicated, this week saw temperatures drop to double digits below zero at night and rise to single digits or low teens during the day. This severe cold has affected a vast portion of the Northern Transcon, stretching from Montana to Wisconsin. BNSF operating teams have taken advantage of slightly warmer weather over the past 24 hours and are focused on improving fluidity and service performance as the weekend approaches. However, another winter storm, currently bringing rain and snow to the West Coast, is expected to move into the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes this weekend. This storm is predicted to bring snow accumulations of six to ten inches, along with plunging temperatures afterward.
Our winter action plans are fully activated, with all resources mobilized and coordinated across multiple command centers as we continue to navigate this challenging environment. To ensure adequate airflow in our trains’ braking systems, train length restrictions remain in effect until midweek next week when warmer temperatures are anticipated.
Our key service metrics reflect the difficult conditions in the north, with reduced car velocity and higher terminal dwell times compared to the previous week. However, our local service measure has improved by over 4% from January levels and has also increased slightly from the prior week.
SERVICE EXPECTATIONS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD
We are monitoring another winter storm expected next week as Arctic air moves across the Central Plains. The storm is predicted to arrive midweek and could bring heavy snow before moving to the East Coast. BNSF teams are ready to respond to weather-related service challenges.
Favorable operating conditions are anticipated for the rest of the BNSF network in the upcoming week.
