Intermodal Network Update for Friday, August 1, 2025

Date
Aug 1, 2025

OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE
Frequent extreme weather across our network has caused some negative impacts on service over the past two weeks. As a result, overall car velocity decreased compared to both the previous week and the monthly average. Terminal dwell increased from last week but remains lower than the previous month and is still at record low levels. Our local service compliance measure decreased slightly, but has improved compared to last month, averaging over 89 percent for the week.

In the Chicago Division, crews recently completed a significant project at our Galesburg classification (hump) yard in Galesburg, Illinois. Our crews worked on key mechanical components to improve efficiency and terminal throughput within the hump yard. A key part of the project involved replacing two retarders, which are crucial for safe and efficient operations at hump yards. They help control the transit and speed of railcars into the bowl.

Other significant accomplishments include:

  • Nearly 8,900 feet of track lift undercutting
  • More than 19,000 feet of shoulder ballast cleaning
  • Nearly 22,000 feet of rail replacement
  • Nearly 1,700 ties replaced

CELEBRATING OUR NEW SALT LAKE CITY INTERMODAL FACILITY
Yesterday, Thursday, July 31, we celebrated our new intermodal facility in Salt Lake City with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. In partnership with Patriot Rail and the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA), this 43-acre site, situated near Salt Lake City International Airport, is another example of BNSF's commitment to providing more flexible service offerings for our customers.

Serving California and Salt Lake City, this strategic launch reflects a shared vision for a more connected, sustainable, cost-efficient and resilient future for the nation’s supply chain. Please reach out to your BNSF marketing representative for any questions about how this service can best meet your freight needs.

SERVICE EXPECTATIONS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD
No significant disruptions due to weather are expected over the next few days. Hot and dry conditions will persist across the Southern and Central Corridors. BNSF teams will continue to monitor track and infrastructure closely for any heat-related issues and will take the appropriate precautions to ensure safe operations.
