Hurricane Ida Recovery Efforts

Date
Aug 30, 2021

Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on Sunday and is now a tropical depression moving north through Mississippi. Widespread power outages are impacting the region as well as major flooding in multiple locations. BNSF has been providing generators to employees in need and assisting affected communities. Our thoughts are with those who have been impacted by the hurricane, and we are supporting the extensive recovery efforts.

This morning, BNSF crews were deployed to inspect network infrastructure in southern Louisiana. Our main line between Lafayette, Louisiana and New Orleans remains out of service. No estimate on re-opening is currently available. Interchange with other carriers in New Orleans also remains suspended with an embargo in effect governing all traffic designated to move into/out of the city. With extensive repair work needed, power outages in New Orleans will likely continue for an extended period.

BNSF pre-positioned track equipment and supplies, including fuel tanks and ballast, for service restoration. Our Engineering, Mechanical, Transportation and Signal teams are engaged in a coordinated effort to safely restore rail operations as expeditiously as possible.

If you have questions about shipment(s) moving through the region, please contact BNSF Customer Support at 1-888-428-2673.

We will provide further updates on this situation.
