Automotive Network Update for Friday, June 9, 2023

Jun 9, 2023

Recovery efforts are ongoing in Arizona following a derailment yesterday morning near West Williams Junction, approximately 32 miles west of Flagstaff. As this incident occurred on the Southern Transcon, our primary route between Southern California and the Midwest, rail operations have been significantly impacted. Both main lines in this location were out of service overnight while crews worked diligently to repair the track. We reopened the first main track this morning and expect to reopen the second one this afternoon. Customers with shipments designated to move through this corridor should expect some lingering delays through the weekend until train flows have fully normalized next week.

As communicated, heavy rain resulted in multiple track washouts last Friday along a three-mile span of track near Hinsdale, Montana, approximately 28 miles west of Glasgow, affecting traffic flows to/from Chicago on our Northern Transcon route. Traffic was temporarily rerouted until the main track and siding were restored to service Saturday evening.

Milk River Subdivision, Montana – June 2023

Thanks to the responsiveness of our crews and the strong condition of the network, we expect continued service improvement and resiliency as we move deeper into June. Average car velocity decreased slightly versus the prior week but is higher than the average for May. Terminal dwell continues to improve versus both the preceding week and last month. Our local service compliance measure decreased from the previous week and month but remains close to 90%. With the Memorial Day holiday included, total volume moved by the railroad was down versus the previous reporting week.

Flood watches and warnings are in effect for parts of northern Washington across central Montana and the northern Plains today, as heavy rainfall may bring flooding to these areas. BNSF teams are monitoring conditions and are prepared to respond to any flood-related service interruptions.

For the rest of the network, seasonable weather and favorable operating conditions are expected, with no extreme weather anticipated during the upcoming week.
