State Facts

Stating the facts about BNSF Railway's State Facts.

BNSF Railway serves more than half the states in the US, not to mention our operations in two Canadian provinces and our rail and Intermodal connections with Mexico, Asia and Europe.

We have close ties to these states. In fact, many of the nearly 400 predecessor railroads included states in their names. As the rail industry grew across our country, states were important building blocks in the emerging rail system.

Today, states provide far more than geographic boundaries. Elected, appointed and civil service leaders play an active role in setting public transportation policy. BNSF Railway works to keep these officials up to date about the vital role we play in intra- and interstate commerce. To do so, we focus on a variety of key issues, including:
  • Public-private transportation initiatives to improve rail crossings and create alternatives to crossings, including over- and underpasses.
  • Shared freight-passenger-commuter rail infrastructure arrangements, consistently demonstrating the most open and productive view of all Class-I railroads in creating innovative relationships. The Alameda (California) commuter corridor and the granddaddy of them all, the former CB&Q-commuter rail relationship, are working examples of providing cooperative, multi-purpose use of right-of-way.
  • State and regional strategic transportation plans, responding to future highway construction limitations by using the opportunity to increase rail transportation solutions without major and expensive capital investments.
Using assets for the greater public good, while preserving the high value we bring to our customers, is central to our way of bringing progressive and resourceful solutions to the people we serve.
