Public Projects

BNSF's Public Projects and Public Infrastructure and Investments teams work with communities and public agencies to support infrastructure improvements, coordinate funding opportunities and advance projects that connect with the BNSF network.

Working together to improve infrastructure

For more than 170 years, BNSF has helped customers move products safely and efficiently across a network spanning 32,500 miles in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. Working with public agencies helps support projects that cross, parallel or connect to the BNSF network while maximizing the value of public and private investment.

Strong partnerships with public agencies reflect a shared commitment to safety, infrastructure development and economic growth in the communities we serve.

Quiet zones

A Quiet Zone is a section of rail line at least one-half mile long that includes one or more consecutive public crossings where train horns are not routinely sounded. Quiet Zones require approved Supplemental Safety Measures (SSMs) or Alternative Safety Measures (ASMs) as outlined in federal regulations under 49 CFR Part 222.

BNSF complies with federal requirements governing locomotive horn use at highway-rail grade crossings. Public authorities with jurisdiction over crossings may pursue Quiet Zone designation through the Federal Railroad Administration process when qualifying conditions are met.
