After 20 years of planning and construction, BNSF’s
bridge at Burlington, Iowa
was completed in 2012. The
$150 million project improves rail service and river transportation. The 356-foot-long lift-span bridge replaced
the former original single-track bridge built in 1868 and converted to a double track in 1893. More than 30 trains
a day use the bridge, which opens about 300 times per month for river traffic. Its construction created hundreds
of jobs in the local community.
