Positive Train Control
BNSF leads the industry in developing and
testing
This system uses global positioning data to
monitor train movement and provides warnings
to crews, stopping the train when necessary to
prevent collisions.
BNSF began development of its PTC system in
2003. Testing started in 2006. Today, BNSF’s
PTC system is under construction or has been
installed across 5,319 miles of track in 14 states.
BNSF’s 2011 capital commitment made available
an additional
$
285 million for PTC development.
