Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation Partners to Protect Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

FORT WORTH, Texas, April 2, 2008:

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Foundation today announced that it has made a commitment to protecting an important Kansas ecosystem through a $250,000 gift to The Nature Conservancy Kansas Chapter’s Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

“At BNSF, we believe it is good citizenship to minimize our impact on the planet, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of every community we serve,” said Matthew K. Rose, chairman, president and chief executive officer. “It is our hope that this gift will help to preserve a significant remnant of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem and offer opportunities for education, inspiration and enjoyment for generations to come.”

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a nearly 11,000-acre remnant of tallgrass prairie located in the heart of the Flint Hills near Cottonwood Falls, Kansas.

“We are very pleased BNSF has given this remarkable gift. Their commitment to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve shows a deep respect for the history, integrity and value of this rare landscape. This gift is made all the more meaningful by the role of the historic Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company whose cattle shipments helped make this property into one of the legendary ranches in Kansas,” said Alan Pollom, The Nature Conservancy Kansas State Director.
