John Lanigan To Join BNSF As Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer

FORT WORTH, Texas, December 17, 2002:

John Lanigan will be appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNSF) (NYSE: BNI), it was announced today by Matt Rose, BNSF Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. Lanigan, 47, will continue in his current role as President and CEO of Logistics.com, Inc. until the completion of the sale of the company to Manhattan Associates by year-end. He previously spent over 16 years with Schneider National, Inc. prior to joining Logistics.com. He will report to Rose and become a member of the Executive Team upon joining BNSF on January 13, 2003.

In commenting on the appointment, Rose said, “ We are excited to have John join Team BNSF. He brings a wealth of experience in providing customers with integrated transportation solutions. He has held a range of leadership positions with Schneider, one of BNSF’s largest intermodal customers, and recently successfully arranged the sale of Logistics.com.”

In addition, Rose continued, “Our growth initiative and five-year revenue targets call for increasing the amount of business we convert to intermodal. John’s understanding of the truckload and intermodal businesses along with his proven record of customer service, revenue growth and people leadership are critical platforms to ensure that BNSF consistently achieves its targets.”

Rose said that Chuck Schultz, who had been CMO and on October 30 announced his plans to retire in mid-2003, will work with John to facilitate a smooth transition over the next several months. In addition, Chuck will continue as Executive Vice President until his retirement, assisting Matt Rose on a number of key strategic assignments.

Lanigan joined Schneider National in 1984 and served in a variety of line and leadership roles. In 1995, he was promoted to President, Transportation Sector where his responsibilities included all trucking and intermodal operations. In 1999, he was named Chief Operating Officer. In 2000, Lanigan joined Logistics.com, a leader in transportation planning and execution software.

A 1977 honors graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Lanigan has a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Science, and earned his M.B.A. degree from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1989. He served for more than six years on active duty with the Coast Guard and retired at the rank of Commander from the Coast Guard Reserve in 1997. He was recalled to active duty in 1990 to serve in Operation Desert Storm.
