BNSF Redesigned Web Site Improves Customer Navigation

FORT WORTH, Texas, April 30, 2002:

The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) today introduced its redesigned Web site to improve navigation so customers can more quickly and easily access more real-time information. Non-customer audiences will also find the site easier to navigate. From the homepage, each audience is immediately directed to the information they may need most.

The Web site -- located at www.bnsf.com -- now includes four main customer buttons that immediately link to pages containing information critical to doing business with BNSF, including:

iPower -- BNSF’s integrated set of Web-enabled tools; all of BNSF’s Web-enabled tools now fall into one of five distinct categories: iPlan, iShip, iManage, iTrace, iPay;

Markets -- information on the geographic regions BNSF serves, the commodities BNSF ships, and other related links;

Prices -- real prices, in real time, for real markets; enables customers to find additional information to help them better plan their pricing updates and price-related maps; and

Products and Services -- information on BNSF’s many products and services, from BNSF’s guaranteed services to Economic Development.

“In 2001, BNSF was recognized by several technology-based publications as having excellent Web site functionality, as well as being a leader among U.S. companies in using the Internet to generate sales and growth,” said Kathleen Regan, vice president, Business Development. “Building on this recognition, we wanted to improve the navigation ability for our customers to make it easier for them to locate information.”

As part of the redesign, BNSF has improved the way customers access its Web-enabled tools. Now called BNSF iPower, BNSF’s Web-enabled tools are organized around the shipping process to help keep shipments moving from beginning to end. Scheduling, inventory management, paying freight bills and other processes are all online and accessible from the BNSF iPower page. All of BNSF’s Web-enabled tools will now be placed into one of five distinct BNSF iPower categories:

iPlan -- plan the movement of freight; includes transit times, prices and other essential planning tools so customers can plan shipments before they start moving

iShip - get freight moving; using these tools, customers can bid on guaranteed placement, create detailed shipping instructions and more

iTrace -- monitor the movement of shipments; customers can use these tracking and tracing tools to get accurate information on their shipments

iManage -- manage non-tracing aspects of shipments and build performance reports; these tools help customers access and manage storage and demurrage charges, and get the reporting information they need

iPay -- pay freight bills; customers can use these tools to pay bills quickly, easily, electronically

“BNSF iPower is our answer to feedback from customers who didn’t know, or couldn’t find, all of the innovative Web-enabled tools BNSF has to offer,” said Regan. “The redesign of our Web site and launch of BNSF iPower reflect a natural progression for BNSF’s online business transactions. Our goal is to provide our customers with more intelligent eBusiness, where we become fully integrated in our customers’ supply chain.”

A subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE: BNI), BNSF operates one of the largest rail networks in North America, with 33,000 route miles of track covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. BNSF is an industry leader in Web-enabling a wide variety of customer transactions. The railway moves more intermodal traffic than any other rail system in the world, is America’s largest grain-hauling railroad, and hauls enough coal to generate more than 11 percent of the electricity produced in the United States.
