BNSF Opens New Intermodal Facility in Stockton, California
STOCKTON, Calif., May 11, 2001:
The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) today celebrated the grand opening of its new $80 million intermodal facility in Stockton, California.
Occupying 425 acres, BNSF’s Stockton Intermodal Facility is designed to improve the efficiency of moving merchandise into and out of Northern California—giving customers improved access to the interstate highway system and other railroads.
The facility is strategically located to help improve service reliability on BNSF’s extensive intermodal network, particularly between Northern California and the Midwest.
“This new facility gives the shipping community a competitive transportation alternative to over-the-road shipping,” says Fritz Draper, vice president, BNSF Business Unit Operations and Support. “In addition, this facility helps to reduce congestion on our nation’s freeways.”
Draper said, “BNSF’s annual intermodal lift capacity in the Stockton area increases by 150 percent, from 120,000 to 300,000 units annually. We are committed to providing outstanding intermodal service to customers in Northern and Central California. The increase in demand we’ve seen in this area led to our decision to build a new facility to accommodate that growth.”
The new facility contains two loading and unloading tracks, averaging 7,000 feet in length, with the capacity to hold approximately 150 intermodal railcars. Three storage tracks will accommodate 230 intermodal railcars and will have more than 800 container and trailer parking spaces.
