The BNSF Automotive Fuel Surcharge (percentage) will be applied to the freight charge. The percentage amount will be determined two months in advance by the monthly average of US average Department of Energy's U.S. Highway Average Diesel Fuel (HDF) Price Index.

If the U.S. National Average Fuel Index equals or exceeds $3.149 per gallon, the fuel surcharge increases 0.5% for every 5-cent increase in fuel price. BNSF will not impose a negative fuel surcharge (or refund) if the HDF price falls below $1.25. The surcharge is subject to change. Prior to August 31, 2005, the effective date of the Automotive Rules and Policies Guide, the Automotive fuel surcharge information and tables were in the BNSF Rules Book 6100.
