New Umler/EMIS System Set for Nov. 7 Implementation

2009-11-02

BNSF will implement the new Umler/EMIS (Equipment Management Information System) on Nov. 7 as part of an industrywide initiative.

Equipment owners, lessees, shippers, rail carriers and rail shops will use this equipment information and these new system-reporting capabilities to exchange vital information about rail equipment.

The new Umler/EMIS system provides foundational data that raises the visibility of specific car and locomotive components (bearings, truck bolsters, brake pipes, etc.). Equipment owners can reduce overall costs by identifying or replacing high-risk components before they fail. The new system will help with early identification.

Also, this system lays the foundation for future industry and BNSF initiatives to manage components at high risk of failure. Ultimately, this new system will reduce delays caused by unscheduled inspections and repairs, help prevent derailments, increase car velocity and minimize car loss and damages.

This multi-phased implementation is significant for BNSF. Railinc, which provides technology resources for the railroad industry, successfully cut over to the new system on Aug. 31. Since Railinc's implementation, several Class I railroads, including Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern, have also successfully implemented the new system.

BNSF's cutover to the new system on Nov. 7 will bring new system capabilities, integration to back-end systems (more than 800 programs) and new Web site capabilities.

Initial users impacted by the Nov. 7 cutover will be limited; they are currently involved in the system testing.
