Grade-Crossing Safety Statistics Show Decrease in Trespasser Reports
2009-10-12
BNSF is reporting a 12-percent decrease in pedestrian-trespasser reports for the first nine months of 2009. In addition, all Federal Railroad Administration-reported events are down 10 percent for the year.
"We continue to work with law enforcement agencies to educate the public about highway rail grade-crossing safety," said Steve Neubauer, director, Field Safety Support. "For example, on Oct. 9, our joint operation with the Phoenix Police Department resulted in 32 citations. The public who watched the drivers being pulled over and, of course. the drivers who were cited are now more aware of the consequences of disregarding the warning devices at a grade crossing."
BNSF Field Safety Support and Resource Protection representatives have been involved in 334 joint operations with law enforcement in 2009. Neubauer encouraged employees to continue to report trespassers and unsafe motorists who continue to put themselves in harm's way and take chances with their own lives, and the lives of others, by disobeying the laws that apply to highway-rail grade crossings.
"BNSF is also on track to achieve the goal of closing 450 grade crossings," Neubauer said. "Maintenance of Way forces have worked closely with Public Projects and Field Safety to close 347 so far this year."
