Seattle Sounder Commuter Rail Reaches Nine-Year Anniversary
2009-10-08
BNSF employees who work with Sound Transit's Sounder Commuter Rail in Seattle recently recognized a nine-year anniversary of service.
Employees have achieved 3,288 days without a reportable employee injury. During the nine-year period, service levels have increased from four daily trains in 2000 to 26 daily trains.
More trains will be added in the next few years based on ridership, which has increased significantly. When the commuter service began in 2000, about 1,000 passengers boarded the daily trains. Now nearly 10,000 passengers ride the rail every day. In addition, the crews operate special event service to all weekend Seahawks' and Mariners' games.
Commuter crews, including engineers and conductors, have operated the service with an on-time performance higher than 98 percent for 2009.
