BNSF Makes "Newsweek" Magazine's First Greenest Companies List
2009-09-24
BNSF was ranked as No. 6 in the Newsweek first Greenest Companies list for transportation and aerospace companies released Sept. 21.
The magazine worked with leading environmental researchers KLD Research & Analytics, Trucost and CorporateRegister.com to rank the 500 largest U.S. companies based on their actual environmental performance, policies and reputation. BNSF's overall ranking in the top 500 was No. 159.
At No. 6 in the transportation sector, BNSF was the top-ranked railroad, right ahead of CSX at No. 7 and Norfolk Southern at No. 11. Union Pacific was ranked No. 20. The top five companies in the transportation sector were United Technologies, United Parcel Service, FedEx, Rockwell Collins and Lockheed Martin.
Newsweek noted that BNSF has initiatives to reduce its greenhouse-gas emissions that include employing new hybrid technologies for locomotives, electric cranes and natural gas-powered locomotives and trucks. The report also noted that BNSF has phased out older locomotive models, installed idle-control mechanisms to reduce idling emissions, and purchased new, significantly more fuel-efficient locomotives.
