Veteran’s Day
2007-11-12
BNSF joins the nation in saluting all veterans across America during Veteran’s Day, Sunday, Nov. 11 (being observed today, Nov. 12).
BNSF has a long tradition of hiring veterans. In 2004, we hired more than 300 veterans with an additional 750 veterans hired in 2005. In 2006, BNSF hired more than 1,000 veterans (20 percent of all hires). And his year, about one-third of all new hires are veterans.
Currently, more than 170 BNSF employees are serving on active duty and more than 500 have been called to active duty since Sept. 11, 2001.
Just last week, BNSF was ranked No. 1 in G.I. Jobs magazine’s annual listing of the Top 50 Military-Friendly Employers.

How Veteran’s Day Became a National Holiday
Nov. 11, 1918, marked the end of World War I, but the beginning of a great tradition. In honor of those brave soldiers who fought and died in what was considered the worst war in history, the day was designated as "Armistice Day." However, in 1952, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress struck out the word "Armistice" and inserted the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became "Veterans Day" to honor American veterans of all wars.
